Order them online, or get them from Wal-Mart or something. These things are AWESOME. Ignore the folks complaining about leaks from the spigot it happens, but, uh, when not in use, you just put the entire thing on its side and it is fine.
These fuckers are heavy when filled, but I love them either way.
Anyway, Burning Man isn’t your typical festival, and silly questions like this are usually going to be answered with snark, because it takes about ten minutes to find a zillion different discussions about bringing water to Burning Man.
Also, I fit water, food, outfits, and shelter for two people in a Station Wagon, so you’ll be fine.
——* /u/Elmostan on /r/BurningMan I agree with everybody else, you are screwed if you try to fit everybody and gear in one car.
But to answer your question, I come from Seattle, so the “Water Stores” I use are also good ones you can use.
Klamath Falls is the last decent sized town before Black Rock city. There’s a Fred Meyer and a Wal-Mart where you can buy flimsy plastic gallon jugs.
I have a bunch of heavy duty jugs and I fill them up at one of 2 places:
1) About 20 miles South of Klamath Falls, look for Eagle’s nest rv park in Tionesta California. The turn off is tiny and poorly marked by a ratty cardboard sign. The owners are burner friendly and will let you camp, shower, and fill your containers for free.
2) In Alturas Across the street from Subway there’s a small mom and pop grocery store. If you buy some stuff, they’ll let you fill up your water from their hose outside.
3???) There might be a place in Cedarville where you can get water, but I’ve never checked.
——* /u/sillycyco on /r/BurningMan These are vastly superior, stackable and work great.
——* /u/RounderKatt on /r/BurningMan I brought 3 of these for my own personal use for drinking, cooking, and swamp cooler. I used all but about 5 gallons
——* /u/HotterRod on /r/BurningMan DO NOT use collapsible water jugs. It seems like it’d be great to be able to squish them up for the drive back, but they are very prone to leaking.
If you don’t want to store containers between Burns or camping trips, buy the largest water containers you can get at a grocery store. 1-gallon or 2.5-gallon jugs can be crumpled and recycled after Exodus. The 5-gallon water cooler jugs are more efficient, but can be tricky to dispense: manual pumps and stands exist, but you can’t buy them at most grocery stores.
If you’re okay with storing containers (great for natural disasters!), I recommend the Reliance 6-gallon or 7-gallon containers.
——* /u/DevAWPs on /r/BurningMan Those containers are terrible, they end up in landfills and are not reusable.
I take three of these out every year https://www.amazon.com/Reliance-Products-Aqua-Tainer-Gallon-Container/dp/B001QC31G6/
——* /u/HotterRod on /r/BurningMan > You can buy a large drum container in Reno and have it filled. It would then depend on how you plan to get out there. You have room on a truck?
Note that a drum full of water cannot be lifted. You need a truck with a ramp it can be rolled up and down.
Water jugs max out at 7 gallons, because 58 pounds is about the most you want to pull out of a trunk.
——* /u/TryptamineX on /r/BurningMan I’m a big fan on these 7-gallon jugs. The cap is reversible with a spout on the other side for easy pouring/transport and they’re fairly durable.
For your personal water when you’re out and about on the Playa I really love my Camelbak; it carries a ton of water and has enough space for sunscreen, hand sanitizer, some trail mix, and a few other little things that I want on me during the day.
