Some comments about this we saw on the web:

* /u/aaron42net on /r/BurningMan The backhaul comes in via 250 miles of microwave links provided by High Desert Internet. BMorg maintains 10 megabits into Gerlach and provides free wifi for the town year-round, and burst that up to 40 megabits for the event.

For the past few years they’ve used Ubiquiti AirMax gear for distribution within the event, and the past two years have had a fully-automatic self-serve provisioning system. I bought a NanoBridge M5, powered it and pointed it in the right direction atop a 20 foot mast, and then filled out a form on a captive portal and was ready to go. For better or worse, they’ve made it way easier to get stable ‘net on playa. I heard something like 150 participant camps took advantage of it this year, in addition to the dozens of groups within BMorg that get ‘net through it.

My access point supports a captive portal mode, with a bunch of hooks for different forms of payment. I’ve been trying to think of something fun to do for “payment” that would work well with the FSM-themed bar.
