Some comments about this we saw on the web:
* /u/markday on /r/BurningMan Raging psytrance! Shitty drum circles. House music. Random, experimental electronic stuff. Paul Oakenfold waving a plastic light saber around while some people held a tarp over his head in the rain (and yes, we stood in the rain for that….). X Dream. As covered in Brian Doherty’s This is Burning Man, the first rave camp “parasitically” attached itself to the event in 1992, so it’s not like there’s much of a “before those things started” in terms of “similar to the event is now, only without DJs”. Here’s a video of Burning Man Nightlife from 1999 (not one of mine….) that has plenty of ambient audio and, yes, some live music. Before there was such a thing as iPods, there were people DJing vinyl records, for sure. We camped next to this in 1999 – basically a giant head from the movie Zardoz, with DJs and dancing inside it to the trance music of the era, if my “archives” are to be believed. I don’t know that live music has ever really drawn the kind of crowds or interest that “music that goes well with whatever you just did” does (ahem), but it’s been around…. not that I’ve ever had much interest (OK, any interest) in seeking it out….——* /u/PapaTua on /r/BurningMan Let’s not overlook the very first Mutant Vehicle ever on the Playa: Pepper Mouser’s Mobile Living Room. I don’t think it was on-playa this year, since Pepper is recovering from knee surgery, but it has been a staple from the very beginning. I rode around on it making daiquiris for everyone on-board with a bolted-down blender on burn night 2006…that was the first and only time I met Flash too… Good times. And if you don’t know who Flash is, you should go look it up…. Know your history, young burners!

BTW, I totally recommend Brian Doherty’s book This Is Burning Man. http://www.amazon.com/This-Is-Burning-Man-Underground/dp/1932100865/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385143829&sr=8-1&keywords=This+is+burning+man
I learned more about the origins of Burning Man from that book than I did by attending Burning Man.

Also highly recommended: This is Burning Man by Brian Doherty.
Fantastic detailed history of the origins & early days, from the Suicide Club, Cacophany Society, then Burning Man.
