Silicosis is something miners get from chronic exposure to silica dust, so yes, the dust is bad for you to breath, but in the limited exposure we get out there for a week at a time, not too risky.

I personally use 2 dust masks, a neoprene respro techno contour face mask, and a bandana I made out of some stretchy fabric. I’m asthmatic (pretty mild), but if I wander around at night without any dust mask protection, I ended up really hosed at the end of the week. So I use the fabric bandana when there’s dust about but it’s not really crazy, and the respro when it’s a full on storm. I’m happy as a clam with this arrangement, and I’m not sucking for air at the end of the week.
