* /u/ranalicious on /r/BurningMan Girl here! My first year I did faerie hair and that worked pretty well but also probably isn’t great for your hair (basically leaving it braided for a week or more and adding ribbons as “hair”). I now have short hair (concave bob) and the last two times I went I made sure to get it cut right before going so the back is definitely off my neck to keep me cool. I might wash it once or twice at the burn but otherwise I let the playa dust do its magic. I normally straighten my hair but I have to just embrace the natural curl I get because otherwise I would go crazy. Be sure to brush it regularly and you can add some leave-in conditioner to try to keep your hair healthy. There is also dry shampoo which will help soak up the oils in your scalp.

I have a habit of getting a Brazilian wax before I go just because I like it. I once had my armpits waxed and while it helped prevent stubble for a short period of time, it was the most painful wax ever and I don’t think I’ll do it again. I just hate having to shave out there when my skin is already really dry.

I have worn basic eyeliner and face glitter but I have only recently gotten more into makeup so I have no idea how it would be out there. Keeping your lips hydrated is important so I always keep a balm with me. A good facial moisturizer would be good, maybe a get a tinted one and wear that instead of heavier foundation. Makeup aside, wearing good facial sunscreen throughout the day is really important, and remember you may be misted with water in the daytime (hopefully with your consent, but sometimes people spray you without asking first, which is sprape).

I also want to add that when considering clothing layers are your friend, but also consider using the porta potty when you plan outfits. A long jacket or skirt can be a pain to manage, and taking it off and leaving it with a friend can be ok but makes for a very cold pee at night. Arm and leg warmers are your best friend! It’s amazing how warm you can be in a short-sleeved shirt and arm warmers. Fishnets and other tights are also warmer than they seem and great for layering and getting cute/creative. Overall, I tend to wear the same few comfy items I brought, and rarely or sometimes never put on that dressy or sexy thing that I brought. Comfort is my #1 priority on the playa.
