FYI, hot glue doesn’t stick to the LED strips very well over extended periods of time. Been there, done that. It depends on the tube the leds are in, but if its that smooth silicone, it’ll be hard to get lots of softer glues to stick.

Staples or small nails (or pins as you suggested) into the shoe sole combined with an epoxy is probably the best bet.

Hot glue is great at protecting a small arduino though. Just encase the entire thing, it’ll be water proof, dust proof and provide some shock protection. You’ll never get it off though.

To attach to a shoe you could encase the whole thing in hot glue, and then run a strip of velcro and glop that on with hot glue. Then just run the velcro through the laces on top of the shoe. You could have a piece of fabric glued to the top side to disguise it a bit. Will probably be messy.
