You don’t need it to be lit during the day, but I think technically you’re required to have it all the time.
I read the vehicle code at the time, but this was a couple years ago – check the nevada vehicle code and follow it to the letter.
——* /u/bonniemuffin on /r/BurningMan Yep, I ziptied the license plate to the outside of the bikes, then I tapped into my tail light wiring and spliced in a DOT-compliant light that I attached to the plate so I was 100% street legal. I used this light: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007V8WBPQ
(I cropped the license plate out of the pictures for privacy reasons.) I, too, saw a ton of people with obscured plates pulled over on my way in.
