Some comments about this we saw on the web:

  • Plastic Ziploc bags - plastic Ziploc bags will be your best friend on the playa. You should pre-bag all your clothes (either into ready-to-wear outfits or by category: stockings, bra tops, skirts, pants, etc). In addition to having our clothes already pre-bagged we brigng/buy a couple boxes each of the gallon and quart size - the freezer kind are the best since they tend to tear less.
  • garbage bags - the black non-tearable kind. This is how you will haul ALL the garbage you make at BM back into Reno so you want to make sure your bags are durable!! There are NO garbage pails or dumpsters of any kind at BM.
  • A bag/backpack, etc - this is the bag that you will have on you pretty much at all times, day and night. It will carry your essential items to make your experiences away from camp safe and enjoyable. A way to make your bag more playa fashionable is to cover it in faux fur. Poof - now it’s the perfect accessory! :) These are some of things that are good to have in your bag at all times: dust mask - THIS IS A MUST AT ALL TIMES
  • goggles - THIS IS A MUST AT ALL TIMES
  • Water - THIS IS A MUST AT ALL TIMES though mostly you will carry this in your bike basket and not directly in your bag.
  • Chapstick - strongly recommended (Palmers Coco Stick [found in the lotion section NOT the lip section] is actually the most awesome thing for lips in the desert. I think chapstick tends to dry your lips out more for some reason)
  • Tissues
  • Map of the playa (if you’re a noobie… see safety)
  • Granola bar/cliff bar, etc
  • Gum
  • safety pins for emergency costume fixes
  • gloves (for night riding) - IMPORTANT - these don’t need to be heavy duty gloves, just something to easily slip on and off for night riding when it gets cold. also helpful because eventually your hands will hurt from gripping the handle bar, no matter WHAT you put on your handles (fur, foam, etc). The gloves are a nice break.
  • Tent lights - we use our tent for our costumes and food supplies and we found these to be really useful you’re getting ready to go out at night. http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-830A250T-Tent-Light/dp/B0009PUPU6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1248020605&sr=8-1 (I think we usually have one or two but to be honest I’m having a hard time remembering exactly how many. I think two. lol)
  • Flashlights - you will want one for each person - just a little hand held one will do.
  • Bike light - get a good LED bike light for the front of your bike. Back in the “suburbs” away from the Esplanade and in the middle of the playa it can be PITCH BLACK. You’ll want a light.
  • Camp stove - we rent one from REI so we can make hot meals - a real treat on the playa. If you are camping in an RV this is not necessary nor is it necessary if you will have unfettered access to an RV at your camp.
