For starters, always keep the spout above the water line. I found out the hard way my first year using them, almost flooded my tent! Next, be sure you have a high place to pour your water fro. If you have weak arms, filling your hydration pack/water bottles is quite a bit of a challenge as a 5 gallon jug tends to weigh ~40lbs.
