Some comments about this we saw on the web:
* /u/sillycyco on /r/BurningMan This is a great little radio, we have one always tuned to MURS channel 5 (154.600 MHz), which is the BRC emergency frequency. This is kept by the first aid and a fire extinguisher. No need for a ham license if it is for an emergency.Technically, this radio violates gov regulations on transmission power for MURS frequencies, as it can transmit at 4w - while the allowed power level for MURS is 2w.
Still, for the price, its great peace of mind. Its a fun little handset, just remember its technically a crime to hit the transmit button (in ham frequencies - FRS is ok.)

——* /u/sillycyco on /r/BurningMan The Baofeng UV-5R hand held radio. Program it with MURS channels 1-5. Keep it in camp for emergencies. MURS channel 5 is BRC 911 and is a direct line to emergency services - fire, medical, etc.
These are amazing little radios, and for the price can’t be beat. Understand they are illegal to transmit on most frequencies it covers without a HAM license, but aint no FCC out there giving a rats ass. Just don’t screw with legitimate coms with it, and if you only keep it for emergencies there are no worries. You do not need a license to transmit during an emergency.
It also has an FM receiver in it, so you can listen to BMIR FM 94.5.
