Some comments about this we saw on the web:

* /u/LunaWires on /r/BurningMan I actually did the electronics for my boyfriend’s e-bike last year. He tore his hip labrum and was waiting for his hip surgery in October. Needless to say he could NOT pedal at all. So, we depended on it greatly.

We did a conversion kit. It was a fair amount of work getting it playa ready. All said and done renting an e-bike may cost the same, and be less of a hassle. If you don’t care about keeping the equipment for funsies after. You can rent an e-bike here: http://www.blackrockbicycles.com/2017_Electric_assist_fat_bike_Rental_p/2017-electric-assist-fat-bike-.htm (Which is likely what it would cost you all said an done with the e-bike kit).

My boyfriend is a bicycle mechanic so we figured with our powers combined we could make something work, and it did! We rode ALL over the playa, to the trash fence and back, and everywhere we felt like and he had plenty of juice. Keep in mind, this wasn’t pedal assist. He was not pedaling at all, so this worked really well. I bought a solar panel to charge the batteries and was able to keep him full of power all burning man long. I’ll detail the solar set up if you find you’re interested in that as well.

$200 - Still here is what I bought for the e-bike conversion we made. Nothing fancy and it had plenty of power. I wouldn’t go with anything crazy expensive. There aren’t hills, you don’t need much power: Rear Wheel kit: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YBWCD6M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

$100 We needed batteries to run it. I purchased HUGE 15AH batteries because I wanted them to last for ages. This was actually kind of stupid, because they were heavy as hell. Boyfriend welded a pretty cool battery holder for the back of the bike and we got by, but I’m certain the weight addition was not a great call on my part. You need to wire them in series to get the power you need. Battery wise 12Volt SLAs are your cheapest option: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KA5M0BW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The biggest pain is charging these guys since I went budget battery option. Charging them in series is not really a great plan. I just disconnected them and charged each battery separately on my solar panel set up. I switched them out throughout the day when we were at camp just hanging around. This did the trick. Still, it was a task and I’m sure there is a better way.

If you don’t go the e-bike rental route feel free to ask me more about the conversion set-up and charging options.

I wasn’t sure our little bike would make it through the burn(it was our first time going), but it performed far beyond our expectations.
