Some comments about this we saw on the web:

* /u/advice47 on /r/BurningMan I bought one of these 10-packs and it was awesome, I kept 2 in my bag, the rest packed up at camp, and you can definitely reuse them so I have about 6 unopened ones left to use this year. It was comfortable, light weight, took up very little room in my bag, and far superior to a bandana for keeping out the dust.

They come in a 10-pack, and I usually only use 1 or 2 each burn, so basically that 10 pack will last you years. Also, they are folded up very small so it’s easy to keep them in a belt, bag, or pocket.

A couple of things I’d say -

  • Look for a better headlamp. You’ll use it every year (and whenever you go camping), so get a nice one. Spending a little money here is ok.

  • Get some industrial quality particulate filters. These look kinda lame, but they will save you from weeks of feeling like a 3-pack a day smoker post-burn. Get a cool dust mask cover to put over it if you’d like or a bandana.

  • Chap stick!

——* /u/mrsmarzen on /r/BurningMan Disclaimer: I’m just a sparklepony with a hulky campmate who does all the heavy lifting and remembers all the important stuff. Here’s what I got:

I picked up this tip from a ranger last spring and it’s worth repeating, especially if you’ve ever seen what rain does to the playa. Carry a roll of duct tape (as if you didn’t already!) and a handful of plastic garbage bags in your carry-on. When the water hits the surface of the playa, it makes a magical tacky cement that cakes onto your bike tires, boots, and basically everything it touches. As soon as it starts sprinkling, step into a garbage bag on each foot. Tape it to your pant/leg and park your bike. When it dries up or when you get to your destination, roll up those dirty bags and trash em at home!

I bring enough sunblock (50 + 60 spf) to keep a small family from getting bit by the day star, no matter what anybody says about the dust protecting you from the UV. Lifeguard’s Choice, which apparently is impossible to buy online currently, is a staple for me during the day. At night I can get away with regular balm, but I would recommend the LG to anybody with sensitive skin or lips prone to chapping.

The wind/whiteouts typically aren’t an issue when we’re in camp, the PVC and tarp are all rebar’d to the playa, anchored by the pickup truck inside. The PVC squeaks some, but the tarp is taut as hell and the wind + dust mostly blows right over it. When the weather is crazy and shitty, as long as we’re home, we can leave the front open and invite wayward souls in.

If we’re leaving camp, we stuff a few of these respirator valve masks in our bags/belts/baskets because they rock! If the dust in the air is unbearable, just double up with a bandana/keffiyeh.

tl;dr Duct tape, garbage bags, sunblock, high SPF lip balm, respirator mask, keffiyeh, good goggles, water. Also read this a few times, seriously.
